How to get from Venice to the Dolomites by bus

There’s no direct bus from Venice to the Dolomites—you’ll need to change buses, most often in Bolzano or Cortina d’Ampezzo. The total journey time is 4-5 hours, although the distance itself is not that great (only 150 km). The main advantage of the bus is its affordability: tickets are significantly cheaper than other options, and the schedule is generally reliable, if you check the current schedule at the bus station in advance. It’s an excellent choice for those traveling light and willing to wait a bit to save money. However, there are some downsides that are worth knowing in advance. Buses are often delayed due to mountain roads and traffic jams, especially during the high season, when the roads are congested with tourists. The wait for a connection can stretch out 30-60 minutes, and with large luggage, it can be quite challenging: there’s limited space on board, and at stops, you’ll have to drag suitcases, backpacks, or sports equipment yourself. If you’re bringing skis, a snowboard, or a bicycle, it’s best to consider another method—it’ll add hassle and could ruin the start of your vacation.

How to get from Venice to the Dolomites by train

Covering the same 150 km by train is slightly faster—approximately 3.5–4.5 hours—but transfers are necessary. The route typically goes through Bolzano, from where local transport continues to the desired destination in the Dolomites. The advantage of the train is that it offers more comfort than a bus: you can settle comfortably by the window, read a book, work, or simply admire the views—the scenery along the way is truly breathtaking. Carrying regular luggage is no problem: the carriages are equipped with special compartments for suitcases. However, Italian trains, unfortunately, are not known for their impeccable punctuality. Delays are so common that experienced travelers always allow extra time in case of a delay. If you miss a connection, you’ll have to wait for the next train—and this can ruin your plans, especially if you have a hotel booked or an excursion planned. Therefore, when choosing a train, it is better to have a couple of extra hours in reserve so as not to be nervous about unexpected delays.

How to get from Venice to the Dolomites by taxi

The most convenient way to cover the 150 km between Venice and the Dolomites is by taxi. The journey will take only 2.5–3 hours, assuming you avoid traffic jams on the mountain roads. The main advantages are obvious: you’ll be picked up from anywhere in Venice—your hotel, train station, or even the waterfront—and taken directly to your destination in the mountains. No need to navigate schedules, lug luggage through train stations, or wait for transfers—everything will be done for you. The driver will help you load and unload your luggage, and you can adjust the route along the way: for example, make a stop at a picturesque viewpoint or stop at a cozy mountain café. But even here there are some nuances. Firstly, not all taxi drivers speak fluent English, so explaining the details of the trip can be challenging. Secondly, cars come in varying capacities: if you’re carrying ski equipment, a large suitcase, or something bulky, it’s worth checking in advance whether the car will fit. And, of course, the cost of such a trip is significantly higher than public transport—a key factor to consider when choosing your mode of transportation. But you’ll save time and energy for the most important thing—enjoying the views of the majestic Dolomites!
