How to get from Lake Bohinj to Venice

Lake Bohinj is Slovenia’s largest permanent lake, hidden deep within Triglav National Park. Unlike the popular Bled, it’s quieter, farther from the tourist crowds, and closer to pristine nature. This is why Bohinj’s guests especially appreciate the comfortable transfer service: getting from here to Venice without a car is no easy task, but our Bohinj-Venice transfer solves the problem elegantly: you’ll pick up at your hotel and arrive in Mestre or at the Venice pier in approximately 3 hours and 10 minutes.

The route winds through picturesque Alpine valleys and continues west—via Nova Gorica or Trieste, depending on traffic conditions. This is one of the most beautiful border corridors in the region: the narrow mountain roads of Slovenia give way to Italian highways, and the Veneto plain gradually unfolds on the horizon. Our drivers know the route well and speak Russian—no language barriers, just professionalism and a willingness to make a short stop at your request.

The VIP Slovenia fleet can find a vehicle to suit any need: a business-class sedan for a couple or business traveler, a minivan for a family with children and gear, or a minibus for a small group. The cabin is equipped with air conditioning and free Wi-Fi, and child seats and additional luggage space are available free of charge upon request. The price is fixed at the time of booking and will not change under any circumstances, and on the day of your trip, you’ll receive a 10% discount off the cost of a regular taxi along the route.

How to get from Lake Bohinj to Venice by bus

There is no direct bus from Bohinj to Venice. From the villages near the lake, you must first take a local bus to Boginska Bistrica or Bled, then transfer to a bus to Ljubljana, and from Ljubljana, take a bus to Venice or Mestra. This means at least two transfers and a travel time of 6 to 7 hours, including waiting for connections. The advantage of this route is its relatively low cost. The disadvantages are obvious: complex multi-stage logistics, heavy dependence on the schedule, and with suitcases or children, each transfer becomes a separate ordeal. During the low season, some flights are cancelled altogether.

How to get from Lake Bohinj to Venice by train

The train route from Bohinj is technically feasible—the nearest station is in Bohinj Bistrica, approximately 6 km from the lake. From there, trains depart via Nova Gorica with a transfer to an Italian train to Venice. The total travel time is approximately 6–7 hours. There’s also a scenic advantage: the section through the Bohinj mountain valley and the tunnel under the Bohinj Pass is one of the most beautiful train routes in Slovenia. However, the disadvantages outweigh the mandatory transfer, the risk of delays, the inconvenience of carrying luggage, and the need to make your own way to the station in Bistrica. For families with children or travelers with a lot of luggage, this option is practically unsuitable.

How to get from Lake Bohinj to Venice by taxi

A taxi is the only viable alternative to a transfer on this route: the journey takes approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes without transfers. Pros: a direct door-to-door service and flexible departure times. Cons: booking a taxi directly at Lake Bohinj is difficult—the local market is very small, and there are few options for international routes. The final price is often unclear and significantly higher than expected, especially if booked through a hotel or with a random driver. Finding a suitable vehicle is even more challenging for a group with extensive luggage or a family with children: booking a minivan will cost significantly more than a pre-arranged professional transfer with a fixed price.
